Jesus Himself talked about sowing seed on hard stony ground in the Parable of the Sower. That seed could not take root at all. It either lies there useless, or is carried away by the wind or another outside force. Seeds do need soft ground to take root. "Softening the ground" is a great description for what happens when the Word of God is "rightfully divided".

I've only just read this account and would like to say how descriptive it is. One can really get a feel for what was experienced at this conference. The idea of Christians softening the ground is excellent. We have often thought of ourselves as 'picking out the stones' so that planting can begin and now we have an extra metaphor to use. Of course, the seed will take root better when the soil is soft.
As always - we have been reminded that change doesn't happen quickly and many people have to quietly keep on working towards godly outcomes. So glad you could be there and pass on the experience to us.
