Tanya,

I don't blame you for how you feel. I hope, though, that you realize that Jesus views you as an equal to men, and that it was never God's intention for men to subjugate women.

Still did a very good job of stating exactly what I was thinking; people can mis-read the Bible and "make" it say anything they want to (this is how white preachers used the Bible to make a case for slavery in the 1800s). But that doesn't mean it's an accurate portrayal of God's word. The Bible, when faithfully translated and interpreted, gives great dignity and respect to women.

I'm so sorry that your experience has been completely the opposite! I hope you will let Jesus begin the process of healing you from all your wounds, which surely He is crying over as much as you are! I know I have had to go through this process too.

Love in Him always,

Tanya,
What I meant by those examples was that Christ, as I read the Bible, conveys incredible dignity to women in his interactions with them. He doesn't talk down to them, doesn't ignore them, doesn't try to tell them what THEY think, doesn't patronize them.

Look at the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-12). The men who bring her to him (religious hypocrites) treat her with less concern than an animal, but Christ, while not minimizing her sin, places it in context of the sinfulness of her accusers until they slink off in shame. He then addresses her with compassion (I don't condemn you) and respect (Don't continue to sin). He sees her as someone of great value, worthy of redemption.
Beautiful!

Tanya,
How terrible that you experienced such tyranny at the hands of religion! As flawed humans, we often read the Bible from our own set of prejudices. You must have caught a full dose of that! I however have found relationship with Christ to be entirely liberating. (I love how he debates with the Samaritan woman and jokes with the Phonecian woman and defends the woman with the alabaster jar against the ridicule of their peers.) God's Holy Spirit opens the Bible so we can increasingly see the liberating, challenging, amazing truth there as we read. I hope you'll give Christ (not his misrepresentation) another look.

The bible and most organized religion is extremely harmful to women. It is very harmful to hear that you must be a sort of slave to men. Because of this, as soon as I turned 18, I walked out of the church, and did not let the door hit me on the way out. submission of one person to another is disgraceful. I hope you all change the church, but I've had it. Even if the churches became totally equal, the pain of the inferior status the bible gave me is still strong.

Lilith, welcome, and I mean that.

We don't get many atheists or deists, or at least not many that I have seen. I hope this was not just a one-time visit and that you plan to stop by again.

Many of us who have accepted Christianity and have rejected the hardline submission teaching are not so much interested in accepting religion written by men or women but are truth seekers who find themselves at this place on their journey. But, we do not assume that those who are not at this point are not truth seekers. And we hope that you and others will converse with us about your own journeys and why you have taken the roads that you have. I find this is a place where differences can be discussed in a safe and civil fashion, if you so choose.

Again, welcome.

You can reject complementarianism but accept Christ. You don't have to be a follower of gender hierarchy in order to follow Jesus.

Please don't let those who believe in female submission to male authority turn you off to Christ. Believe me, the way Christ will treat you will be totally different than the way those who believe in gender hierarchy will treat you.

See comment 75186.

Lillith, sexism isn't from God or about God. It's what sinful humans do to each other. And yes, Christians sin too. So not honoring God will not affect the sexism one iota. But, honoring God and trusting him first and foremost allows God to help us deal with it and sometimes prevent it in our own lives and sometimes others.

Lilith (see comment 75186):

No, we can't really avoid it through atheism or deism. I've put up with my share of sexist behavior from non-theists as well as from theists of all types. Sexism and other types of discrimination are pretty much universal.

About the only thing I've found to be consistently useful in dealing with sexism is knowing something about self-defense, using it successfully only once in front of a few witnesses, and letting the grapevine take care of the rest. Yes, the pacifists will be angry with me for that one; but one good and appropriate show of strength can actually prevent more problems later.

There's a way women can avoid all this and just become atheists or deists. Then you don't have to bother with subjugation - it doesn't apply to you. Don't follow any religion written by men (or women for that matter). My own life became richer and happier when I became an atheist.
